  If Google didn’t already have their hands in everything related to the internet, now they have rolled out something even more!  Google has now rolled out Google Voice, which will help users better manage their voice communications. According to the Google Blog, “The new application improves the way you use your phone. You can get transcripts of your voicemail (see the video below) and archive and search all of the SMS text messages you send and receive. You can also use the service to make low-priced international calls and easily access Goog-411 directory assistance.” Sounds like a great new tool to look into to make business a little more simple.

It is with sadness that I write about another major newspaper ceasing publication.  Tuesday, March 17th will be the final printed edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.  Just like the Rocky Mountain News, this comes as no surprise as the Hearst Corporation was attempting to sell the newspaper with no success.  The company will retain a small staff to continue with an online-only news venture.

Seattle becomes another major city with just one daily printed major newspaper.  The Seattle Times for the moment remains in operation, but is bleeding debt.  The Times is a family-owned newspaper, and will benefit some by the closing of the competition.  There is an outside chance that Seattle could become the first major city with NO printed major newspapers if the family cannot, or chooses not to, withstand the challenging time ahead.

Sadly, there will be more newspapers closing in the near future, and the San Francisco Chronicle is likely to be next.

Over the counter drug companies (OTC) are big at advertising on television during our favorite shows. OTC drugs are medicines such as the allergy, cold/flu and headache medicines we purchase from our local grocery stores. However, advertising budgets are getting smaller, and companies are looking at using these advertising dollars in a more viable sort of way— online.  According to DMNEWS, advertisers are looking at using more online advertising because it is a way to measure their ROI (return on investment) much easier.  Online marketing allows companies to grow a database and track their data. “I think that the trend towards online marketing is continuing because it’s easier to target a specific market for a product,” says Larry Mickelberg, EVP of strategy and new busi­ness at Digitas Health.”

Companies can use the information from the consumers, that are opting in for information, for future offers that allows them to monetize the data again.  These OTC companies are only looking to do opt in advertising online, because not being able to use the consumers data AGAIN does reduce the company’s ROI.  Online lead generation seems to be the way to go with a lot of these companies that have not necessarily looked at it as a viable option.  Leadpile Lead Exchange understands that companies that are not necessarily doing online lead generation, might want to take a look at it.  It is a great way to increase your ROI.

Much has been written and spoken about Twitter recently.  Some people love it, and others view it as a waste of time.  Also, the lack of a business model that produces revenue has been discussed.  Does Twitter act like email, search, and/or social networking?  The answers currently appear to be no, no, and yes.

This week, the people at Hitwise came out with some research on where people are going after visiting Twitter.  Indications are that Twitter is acting more like social networking than search or email.  Two out of five visitors are visiting social networks or entertainment sites after visiting Twitter.

At this point, very little Twitter traffic is visiting retail sites (search activity) nor is the traffic visiting finance, business or dating sites (email activity).  It appears to be more about social networking and distributing content, especially photo-sharing, than on selling products or services.

Things are sure to change rapidly, but it appears that the monetization of Twitter and its growing traffic is a work in progress.  This potentially huge opportunity is still there for the taking.

Everything too good to be true.. probably is.  Now all those that were looking to jump in on the online lead generation business, might have someone up above to face.  According to internetnews.com, “A top U.S. lawmaker in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday said he is working to develop a bill to impose mandatory guidelines on Internet companies to protect user privacy, because the current voluntary approach is falling short. ” Privacy advocates are worried that online activity is potentially jeopardizing consumers private information, and there are no regulations to govern it.
Leadpile Lead Exchange believes in only doing the right thing and not jeopardizing consumers information in ANY way. There are a lot of people out there trying to make a quick buck on hot topics in the news, and unfortunately consumers are not always as guarded with their personal information as they should be. Lawmakers stepping in on this industry could lead to some of those not being able to take advantage of consumers, however them stepping in could also create a lot more “red tape” for those doing the right thing. Thoughts?

I know it is tough going for many people and companies right now.  So, I am writing about the major search engines.  Let’s take roll call… Yahoo are you here?  Good.  How about you Ask.com?  Ok…maybe a little louder next time.  Google, I’m sure you are here… of course you are, you are everywhere.  Lastly, MSN are you out there?  Ok, everyone is accounted for. 

Now, let’s have everyone who increased their market share during this tough year take one step forward.  Ok, anybody else?   If anyone lost market share, please sit down.  Well, as you may have guessed there is only one search engine standing.  Times are tough, but there is only one company weathering the storm, and their dominance is growing.

In February, over 72% of all search queries were done on Google.  An 8% increase from a year ago.  The other three major players (can we call them major anymore?) accounted for over 26% of search activity.  Yahoo accounted for 17% of the search activity (down 17% from a year ago) and isn’t really trying anymore.  Ask.com is also shrinking (down 10%) with little effort to improve.  MSN (down 20%) is at least trying, and may still acquire Yahoo to a form a decent second option to Google.

When we assemble this same group a year from now, will Google have over 80% of the search market?  Don’t bet against it.

Washington is the newest state in the news with regards to payday loans.  According to the Seattle Times, “The House voted 84-10 early Tuesday to pass a bill that would require lenders to offer extended payment plans to borrowers who get in over their heads. The measure also blocks borrowers from receiving loans totaling more than 30 percent of their monthly income. The bill now goes to the Senate.”  Initially there were some provisions that would have limited the amount of interest the consumers had to pay, however that part of the bill was dropped.

Washington adds to the group of states that Leadpile Lead Exchange is keeping an eye on regarding payday lending laws.  Some of the other states we are keeping an eye on are AZ, OH, GA and a few others.  We will keep everyone updated.

NEW LAW IS A BENEFIT TO LEADPILE AS ANYTHING THAT HELPS THE CONSUMER IS A GOOD THING!

Sometimes I come across an interesting article, or hear a great website while watching television.  Therefore, I thought I would pass along this helpful information.  It relates to the topic that most can not get away with at least hearing something about each day…. money.  However, this is a great article about how to save money on everything we are paying too much for.  According to Kiplinger.com, Turmoil in the industry could mean a terrific bargain for you with items such as cars, so we all need to pay attention to where we are paying to much.  The unfortunate thing is someone else’s hardship is potentially your gain, and some different businesses are truly benefiting and so are some consumers.

Here are some everyday things we are just overpaying for now:

1.  Afternon snacks-How many of you try and go with the “healthier” option of a energy/protein bar versus something like a candy bar?  Most would say yes they do.  However, you are paying at least double the amount for a snack that has just as much sugar as that candy bar.  Try going for some fresh fruit instead.

2.  Bottled water- “The dr says drink more water”…. so we grab botttled water at the nearest convenient store of by the bulk at the grocery store.  Unfortunately, that is a lot more expensive than buying for instance a picture with the filter.

3.  Caffeine- We are all guilty of this one… Starbucks. There are much more cheaper options out there, and we know it but just don’t do it.

4.  Music- The days of purchasing a whole CD are kinda becoming extinct, and a lot more expensive than downloading certain tunes on places like iTunes or Amazon.

5.  Movies-The movie theaters seem to be prospering during this tough economy, however there are some even cheaper options out there. With just as much enjoyment using services such as Netflix will allow a person to save a lot of money (ie- babysitters, food, and overall admission costs).

6.  Flowers- A lot of us might be out there purchasing flowers, however if you are there are certainly some cheaper options besides the florist. Look at your local grocery store as a place to pick up that nice set of fresh flowers. There is a potential to save a lot of money and you even have an ability to customize it the way you like it. The recipient of the flowers will like it knowing you just spent more time on their arrangement.

7.  Fruits and veggies- I am guilty of this one. Convenience, convenience, convenience…. cost more, cost more, cost more. Buying pre cut fruits and vegetables will cost up to 3X as much as cutting it yourself, however it is so much easier to have someone else cut it!

8.  Credit card fees-Late fees and over limit fees: a great way to increase your credit card balance really really fast. Check your statements and find out the grace period (if any) that you can pay your bill late. Avoid these charges because this is a great way to increase that credit card balance back up, when you just started getting it down.

9.  ATM fees-Bank with a bank that has a lot of locations so you don’t incorporate those extra fees for taking OUR OWN money out of the bank. Once again, a great way to loose money quick for something we all do regularly. These fees could be up to $4.00 at the ATM you withdrew the money at, AND another out of network bank fee assessed by your bank.

10.  Fax & mail services- Look for cheaper smarter options to fax and send packages. FedEx might be the most convenient place to send a package and maybe a fax, however there are far cheaper options out there if you just look.

I know, I know this does not really relate to Leadpile Lead Exchange and what we do here, however who isn’t trying to at least try and see on some ways to save some money? I think we all are guilty of spending too much on some of these things.

According to internetnews.com, “A new forecast from research group IDC is projecting that in the first quarter of 2009, online ad spending will see its first real decline since the dotcom implosion in 2001. ” In addition, the fourth quarter e-commerce spending had declined, compared to 2007 e-commerce spending. Consumers spending less could certainly have an impact on the overall online ad spending, however it appears paid search has been the best performing. This article also points out the correlation between the US economy (recession some call it) and the overall online advertising being down. Companies don’t have as much money to spend on this aspect of their business, compared to when sales are up they can afford to spend more on things such as advertising.

There was some new local news regarding the payday lending industry.  Our (AZ) House of Representatives voted Monday against a bill that would allow AZ payday lenders to charge up to 113% APR.  According to AZcentral.com, “The legislation would have allowed loans of $200 to $3,000, and they would have to be repaid in five to 24 months. Interest-only payments were prohibited and borrowers could repay loans early with no penalty.” There seems that there should be some happy medium in regards to regulating the payday lending industry, but not necessarily having to eliminate it totally.  Where will this AZ payday legislation end? Allow payday loans…. NOT allow payday loans? Stay tuned!

As children, we all got exposed to the library and how important it was to read books.  However, in recent years the library has become a far second to the internet.  With most Americans having a computer in their home, children are now learning the importance of the internet.  The internet has become the quickest way to learn about anything you could imagine.  However, is this affecting the library and the number of people that attend them?  It appears, there is still value added with the library.

According to NPR News, the library is in fact still a place that many recommend you go to for job information, financial advice/information, and anything else you need to know. In recent years, there has been grants given to libraries that allows them to update resources and offer programs to consumers. Some see a library and it’s librarians as a more “trusted” source for information about things like their finances. The internet can be something potentially that people might not trust as much. So, if you are little overwhelmed by all the information on the internet, you might now want to start to reconsider utilizing your local library!
