GoDaddy Banning China Too

March 26, 2010 By: Mari Woods Holt Category: Technology

We all had heard that Google put restrictions on China users because of a potential cyber attack(s) that had originated in China, however now GoDaddy is planning on doing this too. Reuters is reporting that GoDaddy will stop registering domains in China, however will maintain/service the .cn domain names that already exist. “We believe that many of the current abuses of the Internet originating in China are due to a lack of enforcement against criminal activities by the Chinese government,” Christine Jones, Go Daddy Group Inc general counsel, told a congressional commission hearing on Wednesday.”
GoDaddy has seen several attacks that seem to be originating in China, and this has prompted them to join forces with Google to protest China and the potential attacks. This brings up the issue again of internet censorship and companies putting principle over profits? Should more companies think this way and jump on the Google bandwagon, or is this not something fair that these US companies are doing to China?

Obama Names A National Cyber Security Chief

December 27, 2009 By: Mari Woods Holt Category: Lead Exchange, Technology

After months and months of talking about naming someone to help with our nation’s cyber security, the White House has finally named someone to run this very important division. This past week, they named Howard A. Schmidt as the National Cyber Security Chief. Schmidt is bringing some attractive experience with him, with having worked for eBay and Microsoft.
So the question is what is someone like this going to do to help with cyber security? This sort of position is not something that any other president has appointed, so what will he be doing? The one thing we do know is that the computer systems of the US government need watching, but what about the watching over of the whole technology world that is currently exploding?
Either way, this gentlemen seems to have some history under his belt to help with the US government’s computer systems and hopefully any threats to the our nations cyber world. Time will tell exactly what this new role will be responsible for, however I am sure it is a position that will be constantly evolving with what is going on in Cyber world!

Massive Cyber Attack Linked Possibly To North Korea

July 09, 2009 By: Mari Woods Holt Category: Lead Exchange, Technology

In recent news it was announced that there was a widespread cyber attack that hit dozens of government websites, and some nongovernment websites. While Treasury Department and Federal Trade Commission Web sites were shut down by the software attack, which lasted for days over the holiday weekend, others such as the Pentagon and the White House were able to fend it off with little disruption. These sort of cyber attacks are known as “denial of service” attacks. Websites are inidated with so much internet traffic that they are forced to be taken offline. It is not confirmed that this is 100% related to North Korea, however fingers are being pointed their way. This brings up the question about security on the internet and also with our government agencies. How can occurances like this be prevented with all the sophistication of these sort of hackers? One thing I do know is that the internet is a revolving “monster” that all agencies and companies need to constantly be upgrading their systems to keep protected.
