The auto makers have been in the news lately with the Toyota recall, and now some positive news from Ford. A couple negative years of profits seems to have come to an end with Ford Motor Company. MSNBC is reporting that Ford actually had a profit of 2.9billion dollars for 2009. That’s HUGE for an industry that has had so many struggles. Ford avoided bankruptcy, unlike it’s US competitors, so how did they squeeze out a profit for 2009? It seems that the Ford Credit division helped the overall bottom line.
One thing I hope continues to move in the right direction, and that is people continue to still look to purchase cars… and more importantly they go online!

Believe it or not Wi-Fi is going to be available in cars in the near future (2010 to be exact). Many of us need to go to coffee shops or other public places that allow us the convenience of getting internet access, however it seems that Ford cars are going to be starting to install WI-FI capabilities in next years models. This will be possible with the SYNC system who is partnering up with Microsoft. Consumers will then be able to utilize their laptops in their cars wherever they want!
The advancement of technology is so amazing. Not only can people use their cell phones to access the internet, now they are going to be able to sit in their cars and be on an actual laptop when needed. So will something like this maybe impact the lead generation world, where more people can potentially fill out online forms such as Leadpile’s Microclick form on a website? I think so!

Hyundai started the trend and now GM and Ford are jumping on the bandwagon. These automakers have rolled out new “job loss” protection plans for those looking to purchase a car. According to The Washington Post, “U.S. automobile sales are barely running above an annualized pace of 9 million this year. By comparison, car companies in recent years have sold 16 million to 17 million vehicles. Analysts say the sharp drop suggests that Americans have grown so reluctant to buy new cars that they are even holding back on replacing vehicles that have been in accidents or no longer run.” GM’s job loss plan would cover up to nine car payments of $500 each for customers who lose their jobs, and Ford is offering payments of up to $700 for 12 months.
I am not sure of the specific details of these plans and what sort of “criteria” they set, however this is a positive for those that were a little reluctant on buying a new car. With a little (or lot) of government help, and these sorts of plans being rolled out, maybe there is some chance the auto industry can get back on it’s feet????? In a previous blog post, I discussed about a “car czar” being appointed to help with getting the struggling auto industry in the right direction.  However, the president has chosen to go another route.  

In recent news, Reuters.com is stating that the president has instead decided to create a government task force. It appears Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will be the one to head up this committee. This committee will be overseeing auto bailout loans and other actions related to these struggling auto makers. Details are not out yet, but I am sure we will all be keeping an eye on this.
Leadpile Lead Exchange is anxious for the struggling auto industry to get back on track. However, if by chance there are still dealers or lenders looking for interested car shoppers, we might be a good match to look into getting these leads. Believe it or not there are still some wanting a new car, but I never would have guessed that when driving by the many “ghost like” dealerships. The light is at the end of the tunnel, and hopefully soon the president can be the one to ignite this.

Here is the latest news on what is going on with the struggling auto industry.  Automakers are trying to get congress to approve a bailout for them, yet FORD has announced it does not need any help.  However, congress wants to add a stipluation in with this potential “deal”… that is a “car czar”.  This car czar would potentially be there to monitor every aspect of the money, evaluate the business relationships they have, and oversee everything else related to the industry.

So, what is a car czar and what is congress wanting this “person” to do?  According to NPR news, a few traits that is recommended is someone who knows industrial companies and can follow the money. Another person states the car czar must have financial smarts who is going to make decisions that are going to benefit Americans. However, is this something one person can truely take on? How about a committee that governs these future decisions that are made?
Leadpile Lead Exchange is definitely interested in this industry because we work a lot with the auto finance lead type. What happens in the automakers “world” affects our marketplace. We will be keeping an eye on what happens with the automakers and if they really decide to hire a car czar.

According to Forbes.com, the big 3 auto makers have concluded testimonies in front of Congress. They are requesting emergency financial assistance and failed in their first attempt in front of Congress. Round 2- they get another chance to plea their case. However, Congress is looking to see if these big 3 auto makers actually have a plan in place. According to Forbes, “What they likely want to see is how the carmakers will lower their labor costs and develop more fuel-efficient cars U.S. consumers will want to buy. The companies are happy to lay out their future product plans, which include more hybrids, plug-in electric cars and new turbo-charged gasoline engines that sip fuel. But the rest is tougher to do.”  Let’s see how the next week or so pans out for GM, Chrysler and Ford.  My fingers are crossed for you.

Ford is stepping up and taking action to assist parents in controlling the speed when their teenager are behind the wheel. Teenagers account for a large percentage of car accidents, mainly due to speeding.  Ford has just introduced a new feature called “My Key”.  My Key will play a major role in decreasing potential car accidents caused by teenagers. 
Parents will be able to limit teen drivers to a speed of 80mph, using a computer chip on the key. Parents also have the option of controlling the stereo volume, which has been known to also distract teen drivers.  In addition, there is a programable chip that can be installed to set off a six second chime, if the driver is not wearing their seat-belt.  Parents can even instruct to set up an annoying chime that will keep going off if they go over 45, 55, or 65mph. Safety first!  
My Key will be rolled out in the summer of 2010 in both cars and trucks.  It will debut in the new 2010 Ford Focus, but also become a part of both Lincoln and Mercury models. 

Ford will get a lot of attention with the My Key.  I’m sure it will quickly spread across other recognized brands.  Smart move for Ford to lead the pack on targeting safety and teens. Teens of course are not thrilled, but overall it’s a great feature that Ford created to promote safety.

Now might be the time to go out and get your new GM auto. According to MSNBC, the employee discount promotion will not be extended past the end of this month. If you are wanting any type of GM, now would be the time to go out and get it and save some money! The discount was saving some consumers anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars on that new car. This promotion has been going on since mid August, however sales are still down from the year before. Fortunately, it has allowed GM to have less of a “slump” compared to Ford and Chrysler.

Bankrate.com just released the top 10 selling cars for 2008.  The hottest and most popular automobiles: 

• #10 – The Chevrolet Cobalt.  Listing price $14,217. Sold to date 114,250 vehicles.  Runs at about 25-30 mpg.  
• #9  -  Ford Focus. Listing price $15,363. Sold to date 123,449 cars. Average 28mpg
• #8  -  Chevrolet Impala. Listing price $21,348. Sold to date 138,952.  MPG depends on the cylinder of the vehicle.  Your looking at anywhere between 17-23mpg depending on the version
• #7 – Chevrolet Silverado (light duty). First truck on the top ten.. Listing price$25,921. Sold to date 148,046. They average 11-16mpg. 
• #6  - Nissan Altima.   Listing price $22,798. Sold to date 158,006.  Average 22-26mpg.

Surprised to only see 2 trucks in the top ten?  I think not.  Overall car sales are down 10% this year compared to last year.  Leadpile Lead Exchange deals a lot with the Auto Finance vertical and the volume of leads coming through our system is slightly down also, however we are expecting it to turn around any day now!

In recent weeks the 3 largest automakers have pulled out of leasing. This seems to be affecting the industry already. According to Automotive News one in every 5 vehicles sold was a lease. This is up from 2003 when 1 out of 3 vehicles sold was a lease.

What might happen with these leasing numbers in the near future? Unfortunately, with Chrysler, their leasing partner Chase had pulled out of offering leases, so this took them away from the leasing arena. Knowing this, that means that a few things we could see starting to happen:
1. Consumers begin to purchase vehicles by foreign auto makers.
2. Auto lenders offer lower interest rates.
3. Longer term auto loans becomes a much more common practice.
4. More motorcycles and scooters sales.

What happens in the up and coming months will most likely determine what the actual affect is, and who will survive these changes.
With these auto industry changes it could also affect lead generation companies. Will it increase the number of consumers going online to get an auto, or will it not really have too much affect on the overall lead generation industry? Time will tell.
