Is Technology Changing Anything?

February 24, 2009 By: Mari Holt Category: Lead Exchange, Technology

The obvious answer to this mostly rhetorical question would seem to be “yes”.  However, numbers just released from The Nielsen Company indicate that Americans are still watching a lot of television.  The older the person, the more television, on average, they are watching.  The way people are watching television is changing, and the report is even called the “Three Screen Report”.  People are now watching television on their computers and mobile devices in addition to the standard way.  These additional methods of viewing have added to the time spent watching television programs.  The average American is now watching more than 151 hours of television each month, or about five hours each day.  Last year people were averaging around 145 hours of viewing each month.  So, yes, technology is changing the way we watch television, but is it for the better?

Interesting Numbers

I am sure many people have heard of Nielsen Ratings pertaining to television programs and viewership. Well, times have changed, and the The Nielsen Company now also measures many things internet related. For those people spending money on internet advertising, let me help you out… over 84% of impressions come from two different ad sizes — Leaderboard (728 x 90) generates 61.2% of impressions and Medium Rectangle (300 x 250) garners 23.1% of impressions — all the other different ad sizes split up the remaining 15.7% of the impressions. Advertising delivery type is very clear… 99.9% of all impressions are generated from in-page advertising… all the other types (expanding, pop-under and transitional etc.) get the remaining crumbs. If you are wondering how long people are online… a long time and if you are 35-49, a very long time. The average male is online just over 70 hours a month and the average female is online over 65 hours. Those falling within the 35-49 demographic are online OVER 91 hours a month. Depending on your product or service, there is information available to make you a better marketer.
